The Hong Kong Government announced the pricing of its third digital green bond issuance of HK$10 billion ($1.29 billion). Demand far exceeded supply, with the bond 13x oversubscribed. The digital bond issuance will be roughly in equal amounts in four currencies: HKD, RMB, USD and EUR.
“The HKSAR Government’s third issuance of digital green bond attracted overwhelming subscription, with the issuance amount reaching a new high of HK$10 billion, reflecting the market support for tokenised products,” said Mr Paul Chan, the Financial Secretary. “A number of innovative features have also been introduced to further promote fintech empowerment in the development of bond market as well as green and sustainable finance market.”
Amongst the innovative features was the option to settle the HKD and RMB bond issuances in tokenized central bank money, as previously reported. The government highlighted the expanded scale compared to the second digital bond issuance in February 2024, which was for $756 million and two years, versus up to five years this time.
