BS, MS, PHD

Vice-President for Institutional Advancement at HKUST since October 1, 2020, and is a Chair Professor of Mathematics.
Joined HKUST as the Head of the Department of Mathematics in 2014 and later became the Dean of the School of Science in 2016.
Internationally respected scholar with over 100 research papers in pure and interdisciplinary mathematics, many published in top journals.

Founded the HKUST Big Data Institute and launched the popular Big Data Technology MSc program during his leadership.
Earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1983 and a PhD in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1990.
Started his academic career at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1989 and later served as Department Chair and Professor of Mathematics at Michigan State University in 2007.
Served as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation in the US between 2006 and 2007.
